Of course its Rakim, Raekwon and Dr. Dre.
Don't get me wrong, I love all three. Rakim is one of the most important people in hip hop. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is one of my favorite albums and set the precedent of so many albums that would come later. Dr. Dre is one of my top ten producers, and his production is (usually) always on point.
But what the fuck? Its these dudes jobs to release fucking music and they can't. I'd be willing to give Dre a pass because he produces, but when you've been talking about an album for over 5 years, you better put some shit out. Its not like Dre has label problems, he can put out Detox whenever the fuck he wants. Don't give me that bullshit about him being a perfectionist. How long did it take Relapse to be produced? Not 5 fucking years. When you're working on the most anticipated album in the history of hip hop, and for 5 years, you should have been able to put something out by now. A single, a tracklist, anything.
I'd also be willing to give Raekwon a pass, simply because of late, he's released a shit load of songs which are supposedly on OB4CL2 and two mixtapes. It seems as though the album may actually drop August 11th. And its about fucking time. What has the Chef been doing for the last 6 years since he dropped the Lex Diamond Story? Guest appearances don't take up that much time, and I'm sure 8 Diagrams didn't either. Considering the panning the Lex Diamond Story received, it shouldn't be hard to surpass it, especially since most of the people who will check OB4CL2 didn't hear the first one. But I can understand Rae wanting to make the album loyal to the original, but I don't think fans are expecting an album that will surpass or even come close to it. I don't think anyone went to see the new Star Wars trilogy feeling it would be better than the original trilogy.
Rakim doesn't get a pass. What the fuck has he been doing. I don't even see Ra on guest appearances. He doesn't produce. He doesn't drop mixtapes. Where is the the Seventh Seal? He's been readying this shit since '02 (makes sense it was originally produced by Dr. Dre). Rakim also faces a situation similar to Raekwon's. His last album wasn't too well received, so it shouldn't be too hard to surpass. And it shouldn't be hard to surpass the 18th Letter. Just drop the shit Ra. I have a hard time believing Rakim gets fucked over by labels too. He's motherfucking Rakim Allah. The MC who changed hip hop. I'm sure if he wanted to drop an album a day, he could.
On a related note, what the fuck happened to the Nas and Damian Marley album? Its like no information exists on it past a certain point. And it was supposed to drop next Tuesday.
